Auto Accident Lawyers Warn: Pay Attention At Stop Lights

A recent wreck in Shelbyville is a reminder of the importance of paying attention to traffic light signals.

A recent wreck in Shelbyville is a reminder of the importance of paying attention to traffic light signals. On April 23, 2015, a 21-year-old woman was driving westbound on Madison Street. She later said that she thought she had a green light. The woman continued through the intersection, striking a pickup truck driven by a 66-year-old male, who actually had the green light. The truck flipped and hit another truck, which was stopped. Both the 21-year-old female and the driver of the stopped truck reported being uninjured in the truck wreck. Unfortunately, the 66-year-old male did not survive the auto accident.

Accidents such as this can often be avoided by applying basic safe-driving practices. First of all, pay attention to traffic light signals around you. If your light is not green, do not go. Even if you have a yellow light, you need to make a decision about if you really should continue through the light or if it would be safer to stop.

Second, be extra cautious when driving with the sun in your eyes. Pull down the sun visor. Wear sunglasses. If needed, pull off to the side of the road or into a parking lot. Whether the sun is rising or setting, it will not be in the same location for long. Chances are, you will be able to drive safely if you wait just a few minutes.

It is also important to know the order of the lights on a traffic light. Even if the sun or other weather conditions make it difficult to see the actual color of the light, you can usually tell which light is shining. With the exception of the upside-down traffic light on Syracuse, New York’s Tipperary Hill, traffic lights all over the United States follow the pattern of red, yellow, and green, going either from top to bottom or left to right. Even if you cannot see the actual light color, understanding the color order can help you avoid a wreck.

Finally, even if you have a green light, be aware of drivers around you who might not obey the traffic light. Whether it is someone trying to beat the red light or someone who is not paying attention, your attentiveness can help you to avoid a collision.
