A 65-year-old man died at Vanderbilt University Medical Center after an accident on Dickerson Pike near 1st Street North.

The driver, Gary O. Bates, was driving his truck when he merged off the roadway and hit a pillar. According to the Metro Nashville Police, “Roadway evidence indicates he may have been unconscious prior to the crash and that several bottles of prescription medication were recovered at the scene.”

An autopsy will determine if his death was due to a medical issue or the collision.
